Cambodia Calls for Immediate Release of 18 Soldiers Held by Thailand

PHNOM PENH, August 2, 2025 —  The Ministry of National Defense of Cambodia has reiterated its call for the immediate and unconditional release of 18 Cambodian military personnel currently being held by Thailand, urging that their continued detention violates international humanitarian law.

Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said the 18 soldiers have been under Thai custody since 7:50 a.m. on July 29, 2025. The Thai side has confirmed that the Cambodian soldiers are safe and unharmed.

“The Royal Government of Cambodia continues to actively engage in negotiations to secure their release and reiterates its firm call for their immediate and unconditional release in accordance with international humanitarian law,” the spokesperson said in a statement on August 2.

Cambodia has formally requested Malaysia—current Chair of ASEAN and a key facilitator of the ceasefire agreement between the two countries—to help mediate the situation. The Ministry also urged Thailand to expedite the safe return of the detained personnel.

“The Ministry of National Defense and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces affirm that we will never abandon any of our military personnel under any circumstances,” the spokesperson added.
